Export a mechanical symbol from capture to PCB Editor Reply

I'd like to export a mechanical symbol from capture to allegro (typically a heat-sink without connected pins but only mech. pins).

When I put this symbol in my Capture design (i.e. a capture symbol with a PCB footprint property pointing to my PCB symbol in library) then the netlist created (pstchip.dat) doesn't contain my symbol which is normal since there is no net connected to this symbol.

But is there a way to force this export ?

The only way to do this is use Place - Manually then change the drop down to Mechancial Symbols (you might also need to go to Advanced Tab and check the Library option) then place the Mechcanical Symbol from the list. You would need to create a mechanical symbol first though. You can only associate it to the netlist if you have connections to it.

    Hi steve,

I knew that but I wanted to explicitely export the mechanical symbol from Capture in order to have a trace for design re-use...

The only option you have then is to have a connect pin on the part then it gets written to the netlist and you can place the part. You can always add a NC symbol to the pin so it will never be connected.

There is another alternative. Tools - Database Diary - write the reason why you added the part here. It's a great place to store details about the design....
