 getting a tech LEF from tech .tf format [Encounter 10.11]

    getting a tech LEF from tech .tf format [Encounter 10.11] Reply

     Hi all,

           I am trying to import my gate level netlist to encounter tool and it asks for Technology LEF file but i have been supplied with file in .tf format. Is there any way to convert this .tf in LEF or to use .tf file directly in the tool.

    Hi Nishith, If this is a Milkyway technology file you can use generateLef to convert it. See the following link for the syntax or type "man generateLef" at the Encounter prompt.

    Thanks the command works fine. I have one more issue i have some reference libraries in .db format only is there any way to convert them into LEF.

    hi All, sorry to interrupt your message nisshu, but it is related. what if the .tf is not a milkyway .tf but a virtuoso .tf ( i seem to have *oa*.tf and *cdb*.tf)? i tried the generateLef command, but it seems to hang and then error out. what is the command to read in virtuoso .tf into encounter because i dont' have the correct tech .lef file?     Hi Tony, If you have the technology information defined in Virtuoso you can export LEF from Virtuoso. The completeness of the LEF will depend on whether the Virtuoso technology file contains the rules required for Place & Route. I'm not a Virtuoso expert but I think it's under File->Export->LEF...

    I've not seen physical libraries in a .db format. I've only seen timing libraries with a .db extension. .db typically indicates a proprietary format which cannot be converted except by the company's tools which created it.

    Thanks for the quick reply Brian. What if we don't have virtuoso? can encounter read in a virtuoso .tf file still?

     I'm not aware of a way to translate the .tf file to LEF. Encounter cannot read in the .tf file. Encounter can read technology defined in LEF or OpenAccess.

    Hi, Brian, I follow the document and use generateLef command to convert the .tf file to the .lef file. There are two warnings though. They are "Unsupported capacitance unit name: ff" and " Unsupported time unit name: ps". I found that the cap and time unit definition in the .tf file is ff and ps. The lef file is still generated. Is this a valid conversion?

    The LEF file represents the physical aspects of the cells. It doesn't contain capacitance or timing information so these warnings can be ignored. Extraction uses the cap table and/or the QRC techfile to calculate cap and resistance. Timing is defined in the timing libraries.
