The STMicroelectronics Microcontroller Division develops the company’s STM32 family of 32-bit Flash microcontrollers, which are based on the ARM® Cortex™-M processor. For STM32 microcontrollers to support a wide range of industry applications, they use numerous interfaces and protocols and contain both analog and digital IP.
Increasingly, ST incorporates existing IP with enhanced specs and imports new IP with quality-assessment requirements. As a result, IP reuse and verification productivity are critical to delivering high-quality microcontrollers without letting the schedule slip.
The ST team needed to verify the integration of digital IP components at the system-on-chip (SoC) level much earlier in the process. This would require a better verification methodology. With no room for code errors or lengthy debug cycles, ST turned to Cadence.
By adopting Cadence® functional verification solutions and Incisive® Verification IP (VIP), the ST Microcontroller Division transformed its methodology and saw a number of improvements:
- Shrunk the average verification effort from 35 weeks to 25 weeks for new digital IP
- Reduced the number of bugs discovered after signoff to 0.06 (two bugs per 30 projects)
- Boosted overall verification productivity by 30%
To achieve these benefits, Cadence and ST worked together to define a two-step process. First, they optimized the overall flow to achieve fast verification closure and easy IP reuse. Next, they leveraged Incisive Specman® and SimVision technologies, and a unified coverage- and metric-driven approach, to achieve a zero-defects delivery.
