Cadence and Xilinx Take Embedded Software Development to the Next Level
In an app-driven market, the ability to begin software development as early as possible has a huge impact on productivity, schedule predictability, and ultimately profitability. Cadence and Xilinx are transforming the development flow for embedded designers by enabling software content to drive hardware design. The two companies have just announced the industry’s first virtual platform for system design, software development, and testing of Xilinx Zynq-7000 Extensible Processing Platform (EPP)-based systems—months in advance of hardware availability.
Built on Cadence® Virtual System Platform
technology, the virtual platform provides a stable, feature-rich, fast, and functionally accurate model of the Zynq-7000 EPP and its peripherals, memory, and I/O. Developers can also extend the virtual platform using transaction-level models (TLMs) to support custom devices that will ultimately be instantiated within the Zynq-7000 device’s programmable logic.
“Since 2009, Xilinx has been building a comprehensive development offering for the Zynq-7000 EPP that includes hardware emulation and early access to software, giving many customers the opportunity to have their systems up and running already,” says Larry Getman, Vice President, Xilinx Processing Platforms. “The Cadence/Xilinx solution takes embedded software development to a whole new level by mapping it to the Zynq-7000 family’s unique extensibility without the need for any hardware other than the designers’ workstation.”

The ecosystem of vendors providing tools and operating system support for Zynq-7000 devices continues to grow. The joint solution further enhances the development environment being put into place for Xilinx’s ARM-based processing platform. Attendees at ARM TechCon this week will see a demonstration of the extensible virtual platform.
