Drawings, padstacks, and board files Reply

    Hi,

I am new to Candence PCB Editor software so forgive me for being a novice.

From lowest to highest complextity: padstacks, drawings, boards

I understand that board files encompass both padstacks and drawings and therefore is distributable similar to a PDF. You can edit the library, design, or instance drawing or pad stack when building a board file. However, I am confused when it comes to what is included in a drawing. Are the padstacks used in the drawing embedded in the drawing file?

    Thanks,

    Aric

When "anything" is first loaded into a PCB Editor file, the "current" disk version gets embedded. When a symbol gets created, the current padstack data gets loaded from the PAD file(s) and saved with the symbol, so these can be subsequently extracted from the Symbol files with File>Export>Libraries. The "local" copy of the PAD can be edited, Tools>Padstack>Modify Design Padstack but the PAD file won't necessarily be overwritten, unless the user chooses to do that. When the symbol first gets loaded into PCB Editor, the current disk versions of the PSM and PAD files are used from the PSMPATH and PADPATH settings.
