PCB Editor - Replicate / Create Reply

We used this command in training class so I know it works...........

I'm trying to use it on a new design. I have four "rooms" and the associated components "quick placed" into those rooms. In one of the rooms, I have placed the parts in the order I want them.

According to the instructions I have, in placement edit mode, select the placed components, hover over one of the selected parts and RMB. The pop up menu should have the "place replicate create" option, but mine does not. I get a menu with "align components", "unplace component", "show rats", etc....... No replicate option.

What am I doing wrong? Like I said, I used this command in training and I'm following the instructions we were given.

16.5 OrCAD Professional, or Allegro PCB Designer? Otherwise no placement edit mode. Window select the first placement group, RMB>Place Replicate Create, No etch to select / Deselect? N->RMB>Done, else get the etch you want selected / deselected and then RMB>Done, Command Window - "Pick an origin", then hover over the "Snap to" object and RMB>Snap to>(object), the file browser pops up with the current directory and opportunity to name the MDD file.

(If in doubt, check the Command WIndow for what PCB Editor expects the next action to be)

I just found out that this feature is only available in PCB Editor Professional. I'm using PCB Editor Standard. Looks like I'm manually placing things...........

You could use File>Export / Import >Sub-drawing then assign the references with Logic>Assign RefDes, OR Export Placement with File>Export>Placement, this gets you a place_txt.txt, edit this for the "other" references, as required, the File>Import>Placement, parts will need to be "unplaced" to get the co-ordinates applied.

Thanks OM. I'll keep that one in my back pocket. I think if I try that now, I'll surely get lost.

Before the replicate option I used to create one "perfect circuit" routing, vias and all and then copy it and assign reference designators. It wasn't too bad, but the replicate function is really nice.

I would recommend you the PCB tutorial site of Cadsoft, even If you don't use their products. You can find many answers on PCB design here.
