    Adding a premade footprint Reply

I downloaded the files for a footprint for an IC in my design.  How do I add this footprint to a library?

Symbols are made up of a "drawing" (the .dra file) and the "symbol" (a compiled symbol with a .psm extension).

Put the PSM file in the "PSM path" which can be found in the user setup menu.  The DRA can live somewhere else but there are some tools which look for DRAs in the PSM path.:)

Yes, you have to place psm files in the psm path, if you dont have psm file with dra file open dra file in package designer and go to File>Create Symbol and Create Device then psm file will be generated. Psm path can be set by Setup>User Preference>Paths>psmpath but if you not set your psm path you can put all these files in the working directory where your brd file reside, It works but it is not a professional way.

    Regards

You could store your drawings, symbols and padstacks in the "local" directories. On my PC they are in the directory

    C:\OrCAD\OrCAD_16.2\share\local\pcb\

which includes symbols\ for .psm and .dra files and padstacks\ for the .pad files. These directories are included in the default search paths so the added components will be available for all your designs.
