What's Good About Allegro GRE Bundle Editing? SPB16.3 Has Many New Enhancements!

The Allegro Global Route Environment (GRE) has expanded its capabilities in the area of bundled editing in the SPB16.3 release.

It’s now easier to copy, move, and split bundles.

Copy Flow lets you copy the flow path from one bundle to another. Its primary goal is to allow faster creation of the designer’s flow plan. If you have repeated circuits or regions of your design that have a large number of bundles that will need “similar” flow paths, this command will be great time saver.

Move Flow functionality lets you move the entire flow path from one location to another. Its primary goal is to allow faster creation of the designer’s flow plan. If you would like to make the bundles further apart for “clarity” when creating the flow plan without having to move all the vertices of the flow, this is the way to do it. You can also use this to move bundles apart for resolving crossed guides within the bundles. No matter what, it is very fast and easy to use.

Split Bundle is an existing feature that has been enhanced to make it more powerful. If one wants to split a bundle to create three or more bundles, one must invoke split bundle repeatedly. To address this, the split bundle command’s RMB popup menu has an item called “Next Destination bundle.”

Copy Flow

The Copy Flow command tries to copy all possible data from the primary bundle to the target bundle. Therefore, it will copy the primary bundles as follows:

  • Flow Vertices – the full path
    Note: If you try to copy the flow of a bundle that is “longer or bigger” than the target bundle, the Copy Flow command will “override” this length and copy the primary exactly as it exists to the target. There is no scaling done to make the new path within the boundaries of the old flow path.
  • Flow Vias
  • Properties of the Primary bundle to the Target bundle
    All properties will be copied with the exception of layer properties when there are layer-sets or layer usage constraints that would prevent members of the bundle to become un-routable. In other words, if the primary bundle has Layer-sets that only allow it route on Layers 1&2, and the target bundle has Layer-sets that only allow it to route on Layers 3&4, the primary bundle’s Layer Properties will not be copied to the target bundle. It will be copied with default Layer Usage Properties.

Copy Command Execution
1. Hover over the primary bundle you want to copy.
2. Use the RMB to bring up the Pop-Up Menu and select Copy Flow.
3. Click on the target bundle.



Move Flow

Move flow moves the entire flow, including gather points. The bundle is otherwise unchanged. For example, if the bundle did not have x/y guidance before the move, then it won’t after the move. When move flow is invoked, the entire flow of the bundle (including invisible objects such as flow lines) with rubber band rakes will start moving with the cursor.

Move Flow Command Execution
1. Hover over the bundle you want to move.
2. Use the RMB to bring up the Pop-Up Menu and select Move Flow .
3. The bundle will now be hanging on your Cursor. Move the bundle to the new location and use a LMB click to place the bundle back down on the canvas.



Split Bundle

The Split bundle function lets you now do several things:

  • Split the bundle's membership to start (same as before).
  • Use the new Copy/Move functionality to place the “split-off” bundle on the canvas while in the Split command. This option allows you to place the new bundle in a location that is “better” for viewing the crossed rats that may remain after a split. When this “Move” is done you will returned to the Split command so that you can continue to “push/pop” rats back and forth just as the old command allowed you to do.
  • Multiple Splits. Previously you could only do one split off the primary bundle at a time. Now, you can use the “Next Destination bundle (also on the RMB pop-up while in the Split command)” to continue splitting additional rats of the primary bundle; thereby accelerating your flow plan development.

The old functionality is preserved. The control for this functionality is found in Setup->Design Parameters->Flow Planning->General. To get this new functionality (Copy/Move when split) check this checkbox. If you want the original functionality leave this box unchecked.


Split bundle Command Execution

1. Hover over the bundle you want to split and use the RMB to get the Pop-up Menu. Select the Split bundle command.
2. Select with a LMB Mouse or frame selection the rats you want in the new bundle. Now the new bundle will be “hanging” on your cursor.
3. Place the bundle on the canvas where you need clarity for routing purposes.
4. You will now be back in the Split command where you can again push/pop rats between the new bundle and the primary bundle.
5. If you want to split the bundle again, press the RMB and pick the “Next Destination bundle option. Follow the steps in 2, 3 and 4 until you are done splitting this bundle.
6. You can also Copy Flow from the RMB menu.
