This was supposed to be a post either reviewing 2008 or
looking ahead to 2009. Well, 2008 was
quite an eventful year. Yes, I have a
keen sense for the obvious. I'd rather
not rehash the headlines on the economy, the stock market, or even Cadence
itself. Even looking ahead to 2009,
things look challenging for the general economic environment.
What I'd rather talk about is what I really see happening on
the ground. I still see electronics innovation
happening as fast as ever. It's great to
be a consumer right now, with affordable HD camcorders, multimedia cell phones,
video game consoles with built-in networking for multi-player, powerful PC's
that can watch, record, and edit video, etc.
And enabling all of this is infrastructure that is being upgraded -
faster wired and wireless network backbones, incredible leaps in storage, and "cloud
computing" to name a few. And these
infrastructure upgrades will enable innovation of new product categories.
Yes, there is some inventory overhang to burn off in some areas. But there is also tremendous demand for new
chips that combine all this horsepower with....lower power. And that's where what I see everyday here at
Cadence comes into play. I get to see
how our products help customers design ultra low power chips that still meet
aggressive performance goals. Or when we can help customers push the envelope to make
their products more competitive and still meet their market windows.
These are headlines I don't mind rehashing, because they
point towards a brighter future. You may not have heard of some of these companies
or used their technology...yet. But you
will. Some of it may not succeed long-term. But that's part of the innovation process,
and it's great to see that it's still happening and to be a part of it.
Yes, 2009 sounds like another challenging year, but this
whole process is just creative destruction.
It wasn't that long ago that we had all this broadband overhang and dot-com
companies (and sock puppets) dying off, only to give rise to new categories
(was "social networking" even a known term back when "B2B" was?). From the Cadence point of view, it was a tough year in some respects, but we have a lot of great new innovation
we've released based on customer demand - think RC-Physical or Conformal ECO - and we have even more due out in 2009 that I wish I could talk about now. I
can't say how much Cadence will benefit monetarily from these new innovations
in the coming year, but I can say that I know our customers will. And that will ultimately help drive
innovation that benefits us all.
