Cadence’s Steve Leibson Launches EDA360 Insider Blog

Comments(0)Filed under: EDA360, Denali, Android, EDN, Leibson, EDA360 Insider

Last April Cadence published the EDA360 vision paper, a document that outlines a new, application-driven approach to electronic system design. From the start it was a vision for the entire EDA industry, not just Cadence. And it soon became clear that the paper was not just about EDA, but about a major shift affecting everyone who works within, or depends upon, the semiconductor and systems industries.

It's time to take a deeper, broader look at current trends in IC and systems design through the lens of EDA360. And that's what Steve Leibson is doing in a new blog called EDA360 Insider. It would be hard to find a more qualified source. An engineer by training, Steve has been writing for engineers since the 1970s, and has been a keen observer of the electronics industry ever since.

Although Steve joined Cadence recently through the Denali acquisition, I've known him for many years. Steve was editor-in-chief of EDN from 1993 to 1996, and he also served as editor-in-chief of Microprocessor Report and the Wind River Embedded Developers Journal. He was a technology evangelist at Tensilica for 8 years, and he then joined Denali right before the Cadence acquisition was announced. He still writes the Denali Memory Report as well as a blog for the Low-Power Design web site.

Today Steve is EDA360 Evangelist at Cadence. What does that involve? "Like any evangelist, I'll be spreading the word," he said. "In this case it's about a radical change in the design of electronic systems."

The new blog will discuss current events and talk about the ins and outs of system design from an "insider" perspective. But don't let the word "system" fool you - this is not an ESL blog. It will cover all aspects of IC and system design, including System Realization, SoC Realization, and Silicon Realization. If you are involved in any aspect of electronic systems design, from designing transistors to verifying RTL code to writing embedded software, you will find postings of interest to you.

An initial posting of EDA360 Insider looks at a new survey that shows how applications developers are warming to the Google Android operating system. 72% of developers surveyed said that Android is the OS best positioned to power connected devices in the future. Android is a powerful illustration of the EDA360 vision, in which the intended applications drive the definition of the underlying hardware platforms.

EDA360 Insider is hosted on Wordpress, so you won't find it grouped with other Cadence Community blogs. You will find it here. Please check it out and let Steve know what you think.
