Unhinged: Alberto on Cyber-Physical Systems, 25 years in EDA

If it's Friday, it's time for a little fun with episode #3 of Unhinged, the electronics-industry web TV show that tries to ask and answer the most-pressing questions of our time (like "why did the engineer cross the road?")

This episode's lineup includes:

  • What's up with the helium shortage?
  • A peek at an amazing camera phone
  • Top 5 social networking startups you need to invest in
  • Teardown: How tough are IBM ThinkPads? Pretty darn tough
  • Interview with Alberto Sangiovanni-Vincentelli

Check out the show but more importantly, check out the extended interview (embedded below) with Alberto.

In it, he and Richard Goering discuss the evolution of EDA and Cadence over the past 25 years (trivia question: What was SDA briefly before it became SDA?) and what's to come in the next 25. Among the questions they explore:

  • What are the consequences of the new generation of systems-design companies getting into the silicon-design business?
  • How do we bring EDA methodologies to complete systems (automotive, airplanes, wireless sensor networks)?
  • Will we design bacteria the way we design VLSI circuits?

It's a fascinating conversation. And stay tuned for episode 4, coming in two weeks (sneak peek: Samsung engineers talk image sensors design!).
